What You Need to Know About "Hard-to-Fit" Eyes
One word of warning that we like to let patients know about before they make the switch to contact lenses is that not everybody is a viable candidate for "traditional" contact lenses due to certain eye and vision conditions they may experience. These people who have difficulty wearing regular contacts are known as having "hard-to-fit" eyes. There are many conditions that can make you hard-to-fit for regular contacts, including:
- Dry eyes
For example, astigmatism makes the surface of the eye (the lens) an irregular shape. As a result, regular contact lenses cannot be properly fitted to the eye. The good news, however, is that there are specialty contact lenses that can be recommended for hard-to-fit eyes in most cases.
How Our Eye Doctor Can Help
In our office, we offer contact lens exams for patients looking to make the switch to contacts. The purpose of this exam is to determine whether you're a good candidate for contacts and, if so, which type of contact lens is best for your needs and lifestyle. If you are one of many patients who is hard-to-fit for traditional contact lenses, we can make a recommendation for specialty lenses. We also carry a wide selection of specialty lenses in our office, including:
- Gas permeable lenses
- Toric lenses
- Bifocal and multifocal lenses
For example, those with astigmatism (as explained above) could benefit from wearing toric lenses, as these can be custom made to align with the unique curvature of your eye for an ideal fit. Gas permeable lenses, on the other hand, may be a better option for those with keratoconus, since their design can relieve pressure on the corneas.
Ultimately, our goal with a contact lens exam is to make sure you get the most customized and tailored recommendation for the contact lenses that will allow for a smooth transition. During your appointment, we can also provide you with some guidance on how to properly insert, remove, and care for your new contact lenses. We want to make sure that all patients making the switch to contact lenses can do so with confidence. As such, our eye doctor is always here to help if you have questions or concerns during your transition to contacts. And of course, you can order the lenses you need right here in our office.
