Age-Related Vision Changes

As we get older, our vision starts to lose its focus quite literally. Due to a lack of elasticity and moisture production, the tissue in and around the eyes loses its ability to heal itself. As a result, we may be more apt to develop cataracts, loss of night vision, and other age-related vision issues that lead to a loss of vision. Fortunately, with vision correction devices including eyeglasses, contact lenses, and eye surgery we can slow or reverse these conditions and regain our vision.

Age-Related Eye Diseases

Seniors are also more likely to show symptoms of certain eye diseases that affect this age group. One of the most common senior eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration. This is a very slowly progressing eye disease that takes years before it shows symptoms, which is a loss of focus and clarity. Unfortunately, by waiting until then symptoms show up, AMD is at the late stage and vision loss is permanent. Other age-related eye diseases include glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Treatment for Senior Eye Diseases

Fortunately, most senior eye diseases including age-related macular degeneration can be treated. While AMD cannot be cured there are treatments to slow its progression including a formula of vitamins called AREDS. Glaucoma and cataracts can be treated using eye surgery procedures that often involve outpatient services. Diabetic retinopathy can be prevented by lifestyle recommendations by our optometrist. These include taking control of one’s diabetes and eating a healthy diet.
